Vienna, the elegant capital of Austria, has been on my travel bucket list and I can’t wait to visit it, hopefully soon. The spectacular architecture, significant art and culture, magical Christmas markets and even the Viennese coffee –all great reasons to visit Austria’s capital.
Everything about Vienna sounds perfect and over the past few years the idea of visiting Austria’s capital has been stuck with me. I love making lists of things to do and see in my dream destinations, and that’s what I did here. So enough said, here’s my list of the top 7 places to see in and around Vienna, that you can also keep in mind when visiting this European gem.
1. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna
St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) is the most important religious building in Vienna and I would say – one of the most impressive architectural achievements in the city. This massive piece of art is a more than 100 metres long and 136 metres tall. Impressive!

2. Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens
Another spectacular sight that stuck into my mind was the Baroque Palace of Schönbrunn along with its vast gardens. This absolutely outstanding ensemble was residence of the Habsburg emperors and is also part of the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

3. Belvedere Palaces
Another impressive Baroque landmark in Vienna I really want to see is the Belvedere complex which consists of two palaces, orangery and stables. With its many fountains, cascades and sculpture surrounding the area, it is definitely a must see.

4. Hofburg Palace
The Hofburg Palace in Vienna is a former imperial residence and nowadays, some of its areas are part of the workplace and residence of Austria’s President. Again, the impressive architecture can leave you speechless.

5. Day trips to Budapest, Prage and Salzburg
One of the great things about Vienna is its proximity to other significant European capitals and important cities. For only a day you can go sightseeing in Budapest, Prague, Bratislava or Salzburg. So it is better to plan ahead a few extra days for some tours in and around Vienna!
6. Klosterneuburg Abbey
Another interesting place to see around Vienna is the Klosterneuburg Abbey. Because of its unique art treasures, cultural and religious significance and vineyard visiting options, Klosterneuburg looks like a nice detour and is just half an hour away from Vienna.
7. Naschmarkt and Brunnenmarkt
You should always consider visiting a local market to experience the authentic local atmosphere when you travel. You can find exotic specialties and local delicacies in both Naschmarket and Brunnenmarkt.

Other equally exciting things to see in and around Vienna that really got my attention are the MuseumQuartier or the world’s oldest zoo – the Tiergarten. Taking a boat trip on Danube also sounds good to me. With all the variety of things to see and do I think there is no visitor of Vienna that hasn’t fallen in love with the city.
Are you going to Vienna soon? What are you most excited to see in Austria’s capital?
